Details of Portland State University Scholarships

PSU also awards hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to students each year through the Portland State University Scholarships Universe. PSU scholarship applications are accepted October 1 to February 1 annually and must be submitted separately from your admission application. Scholarships are awarded once each year. PSU’s Scholarship Application is used to award both general (non-degree specific) as well as programmatic, departmental, and college-specific scholarships. Not all scholarships are awarded through the PSU application. Contact your department, school, or college to find out if they offer other scholarship opportunities.

International Achievement Scholarship – Portland State University Scholarships

The International Achievement Scholarship is awarded to new incoming international undergraduate students on the basis of their academic achievement. Students who maintain high academic standing are automatically reviewed for the scholarship at the time of admission. 

Award Amount: Between $3,000 and $10,000 per academic year annually

Eligibility

  • Eligible students typically have entering equivalent grade point averages (GPA) of at least 3.25 out of a possible 4.0 grading scale; 
  • Students sponsored by state entities or outside parties/organizations  may be ineligible for the award. Specific university-level partnerships are also excluded from eligibility. 
  • The International Achievement Scholarship is restricted to new admission applicants only.  Students already enrolled at Portland state are not eligible to apply for this scholarship or to request  an increase in an award amount after the point of admission;
  • Recipients must be classified as non-resident for tuition classification status;
  • Students who have not yet met the TOEFL/English Language Proficiency requirement are eligible for this scholarship; however, activation of the scholarship will be delayed until after the ESL restriction has been lifted and the students are fully eligible for unrestricted enrollment in academic degree-seeking coursework.

No separate application is required. Applicants are automatically considered.

International Elite Scholar & Diversity Award – Portland State University Scholarships

The International Achievement Scholarship is awarded to new incoming international undergraduate students from underrepresented countries at PSU and on the basis of their academic performance.

Award Amount: Up to $8,000 per academic year annually.

  • Academic performance.

No separate application is required. All applicants are automatically considered.

University Honors College Scholarships and Fellowships – Portland State University Scholarships

These scholarships and fellowships are only offered to Honors students at Portland State University.

Honors Laurels Scholarship

Award:

Up to $3,000 per year

Eligibility:

Students who apply to PSU and the Honors College by January 1, to start in fall term, are automatically considered.

This is a tuition remission scholarship awarded to outstanding applicants to the Honors College. The award is based primarily on the student’s application essays, although GPA and other factors may be taken into account. Awarded once a year to new applicants to the college, and renewable for up to four years. There is no separate application for this scholarship.

Honors Rosenbaum Service Leadership Scholars – Portland State University Scholarships

Award:

Rosenbaum Service Leadership Scholars will receive a $2,000 scholarship over the academic year they are in the program, earn 8 Honors internship credits, and receive a remission scholarship covering these internship credits. 

Eligibility:

Honors student in good standing.

Students accepted into the program will be matched with a local non-profit board, for which they will serve as an intern. Students will develop leadership skills by engaging with and receiving mentorship from the chair and members of the board and executive director of the non-profit organization. Internships will run for the 9-month academic year from September-June. Scholars are selected in spring term for the following academic year through a competitive application process.

President’s Award for Honors Research and Internships – Portland State University Scholarships

Award:

Up to $500 is available per student to help cover specific costs related to research, internship, or thesis work. 

Eligibility:

Honors student in good standing.

Students may be awarded this funding once during their tenure in Honors. Students must be enrolled in Honors research, internship, thesis, or course credits to receive this funding. The Honors College generally funds transportation costs associated with conferences or thesis research; supplies associated with thesis research; and fees for conferences associated with your research or internship. Awards are made on a rolling basis throughout the academic year, through this application.

EAGLES Scholarship – Portland State University Scholarships

Award:

$10,000 per year, renewable

Eligibility:

Honors College students from under-represented backgrounds in STEM fields, who have at least two years of undergraduate study. Scholarships are need- and merit-based. 

The NSF-funded EAGLES scholarship awards $10,000 towards the total cost of tuition for students earning a STEM degree. Students also receive mentorship from faculty and members of the scientific community, along with opportunities to participate in environmental pollution research and paid internships. Honors Editorial Fellowship at Pacific Historical Review – Portland State University Scholarships

Eligibility:

The John and LaRee Caughey Honors College Editorial Fellowship with Tuition Grant is a 12-month fellowship beginning in mid-September. As a cooperative effort between the PSU University Honors College, The John and LaRee Caughey Foundation, and the Pacific Historical Review, the PHR is happy to offer an undergraduate fellow position to a student currently enrolled in the University Honors College as either a rising junior or rising senior. Students in history (or any major or field of study) are encouraged to apply. Fellows receive a $5,000 tuition remission scholarship and an hourly wage for 12 hours a week. Fellows are selected in winter term for the following academic year through a competitive application process. 

Anne E. Sivers STEM scholarship – Portland State University Scholarships

This is a $5000 annual award, renewable for two years, for two students per year. Students must be majoring in a STEM field, with preference given to students studying engineering or physics. Students should have demonstrated financial need and outstanding academic merit. The application opens in April for the following academic year and will be available here.

Prof. Starry’s Home Ecology Lab Scholarship – Portland State University Scholarships

Award:

Up to $4,000 for one year, plus $1000 for research materials or conference attendance.

Eligibility:

Honors College student in good standing; juniors preferred, sophomores considered. The scholarship may be renewed one time, depending on circumstances.

Home Ecology Lab scholars receive financial support enabling them to prioritize a research experience that will help them acquire valuable project management skills while also learning different lab techniques. Projects are all related to the focus of Professor Starry’s  home ecology lab, which is the application of ecological theory to urban systems, especially at the household scale. Green roofs are often the main study system investigated. Students are encouraged to participate in an annual team project, such as group literature review, while also pursuing their own independent research projects. Scholars are selected in spring term for the following academic year; the application will be posted here.
